Devlog #1 - Project Kickoff
Today I brainstormed a few different ideas for the April 2025 Week Sauce Game Jam. The theme is "The Illusion of Choice." I decided to go with a 2D top-down, pixel art game that is storey-driven, with elements of comedy and satire.
The Gauntlet of Consequence presents players with a series of increasingly dramatic rooms, each presenting a very important binary choice that they must make in order to progress. The game mixes retro pixel visuals, simple choices, and dry, satirical narration, and I will be using Unity and C# for development, with Aseprite for any art edits that are needed, and Illustrator and Photoshop for creating UI elements.
After deciding upon my game's mechanics, I drew a flowchart that includes:
- concepts for each room's theme/vibe
- the two objects that the player must choose from in each room
- what happens with each choice
- full dialogue for the narrator from intro - finish
I also pulled some fantastic pixel art assets from here on itch.io that I hope to be able to use.
Next, I want to get started in Unity with creating a basic Game Manager script and building the first room prefab.
